There are many books about psychological trauma in the fire service.
This is one of the best. A great perspective from a honest, hardworking
firefighter and leader.

As the memories flooded his mind, the weight of countless calls and years of experience weighed heavily upon him. This remarkable individual, boasting over four decades as a firefighter, had seen it all and now bore the consequences of his unwavering commitment to service. In that moment, I observed him in silence, his gaze fixed upon a blank wall. It wasn't a state of being lost or despondent; rather, he appeared deeply engrossed in introspection—an unfamiliar occurrence in his busy existence. Perhaps, I pondered, he was revisiting the faces of his fallen comrades or the tragic victims, particularly the innocent children, whose lives were claimed by unimaginable circumstances. It could very well have been both, and I recognized the opportunity to provide him with the space to delve into these emotions, which had long lain dormant but were now resurfacing. In the realm of communication, silence possesses a profound power. When someone yearns to express their thoughts, refraining from interjecting and granting them uninterrupted solace is one of the most compassionate acts one can undertake. These tranquil moments afford individuals a secure environment to explore their musings and shape forthcoming words. By resisting the urge to fill the void with further inquiries to alleviate our own discomfort, we allow them the precious time they undoubtedly require. Individuals like him, entrenched in the old school mentality, rarely divulge their innermost emotions. Thus, witnessing this breakthrough was truly momentous. I couldn't help but marvel at the courage it must have taken for him to reach this point. Four decades of accumulated traumatic memories are nearly incomprehensible, yet he exhibited remarkable mental fortitude. In contrast, most people struggle to endure an extra two minutes in a Walmart checkout line without succumbing to exasperation. Yet, beneath his composed exterior, the lingering effects of trauma gradually seeped through. This encounter sparked a profound contemplation within me. I had always held a deep respect for this individual; he had been one of my favorite people. However, my admiration grew even stronger now that I saw him as someone I could relate to on a deeper level. It made me yearn for the ability to make others understand the inherent price we pay for upholding a facade of resilience. Why do we stifle our emotions? Why do we feign well-being when we are far from it? Most importantly, how can we break free from this cycle? Though I have yet to find the answer, I am committed to the search. Since embarking on my own personal journey, one thing has become abundantly clear: when I open myself up to vulnerability, others eagerly follow suit. It is as though they have been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to unburden themselves from the silent weight they have carried. I am on a mission to effect change in this life. Each passing day brings us closer to the final beat of our hearts and the last rise and fall of our chests. With the uncertainty surrounding the arrival of that fateful day, why would we choose to bear unnecessary burdens until the very end? I implore you to join me in dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health. The road ahead is challenging, and I cannot shoulder this burden alone. Together, let us embark on this journey, united in the fight to break the chains that bind us. Until our paths cross, let us rise and fight!
